For example, controlling a water heater so that it does not increase load during a peak time may be invisible to the resident but beneficial to the utility at scale. As we look to the future, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), and the management of residential resources through smart home technology will give utilities and customers the ability to flex demand-side energy resources and manage diverse DERs, individually and at scale. Smart homes, residential solar, storage, IoT devices—these are all part of the future advanced energy ecosystem.
